Planting and Growing DahliasPrepare a location that provides plenty of sun, and plant tubers one to three feet apart in good soil that drains well. Plant the tubers next to a stake so they can be tied up later, when rain or wind may bend down the mature plants. Keep slugs away; they can destroy the sprouts as soon as they break the soil surface. Check the leaves and stems for aphids or other pests and spray as needed. Many recommend poisons, but a weak soapy water solution with hot pepper juice works well too. Learn to pinch new growth to control size and direct energy for the best blooms. Refer to the expert resources for advice on caring for your dahlias in your area.
